The Purpose of Belonging

pi phi recolor newsletter

Life is filled with ironies. As I entered The Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky for the Pi Beta Phi 75th Biennial Convention, I struck up a conversation with the first two young women I met at check in. The first question asked was, “Where are you from?” They replied, “Springfield, Missouri.” The next question was, “What college do you attend?” They enthusiastically responded with, “Drury!” From there, the conversation flowed as I mentioned that my mother, Dottie Warren, grew up in Springfield and attended the same college they did, Drury College, which is a small private college with approximately 3,000 students located in Springfield.

As I prepared to deliver the keynote address to the 900 members of my college sorority, it struck me how easy it can be to find connections when we make an effort. I also realized that my association with Pi Beta Phi had spanned many decades. The friends I made as a Pi Phi at the University of Texas are my lifelong sisters, and new Pi Beta Phi relationships are invaluable.

Many people I talk to say they are just not “joiners.” They would rather not get involved with groups that might take an inordinate amount of time and money. I admit that I am discerning when it comes to the groups, boards and organizations with which I choose to invest my valuable time. However, when I do join a group, I feel that it’s important to contribute. Occasionally, we may find ourselves assuming leadership roles, which can significantly enhance our personal and professional development as well.

Joining groups should have a purpose, like working for the common good, contributing new ideas or advancing your community. You might enjoy building friendships, networking and growth opportunities. Maybe you will find mentors and collaborators to move you forward. These groups are outside of our work relationships. And yet, these groups expand our areas of curiosity, professional and personal development, and deepen lasting friendships and team efforts to accomplish a purpose.

Join and put your whole self into the experience. I am surprised how many organizations, boards and groups that I’ve joined over the years, have carried me through the decades of change with hope and energy.

Feeling good after reconnecting with my Pi Phi sisters,
