Looking West

Decembers Wintry Palette Newsletter

[February 20, 2024 – Blog] I can close my eyes and I am at a Led Zeppelin concert in Houston, Texas in 1972. The shirtless and provocative, Robert Plant is singing “Stairway To Heaven.” At the time I was enthralled as a freshman in high school to be there in the first place, but I didn’t realize I was seeing the performance of what has later been regarded as one of the greatest rock songs of all time. There are as many interpretations to the meaning of this song as there are letters in the alphabet, but nonetheless one particular line in the lyrics has stuck with me.

For some of you who have followed my paintings, you may recognize that many of them are named for songs I love or lyrics that mean something to me. “Stairway to Heaven” is one that holds the key to my fascination with sunsets. As the song builds momentum, Plant sings, ‘There’s a feeling I get when I look to the west,’ and oh yeah, there is great emotion and feeling I get when I take in a westward sky filled with the saturated colors and cloud formations. So much so that I am compelled to pick up my paintbrush and capture the magic on a canvas right then and there.

If you love music, poems and passages from well-written books, you know what I am talking about. The melodies and words swirl around in our hearts and help us find meaning and purpose in life. It is the creative calling we yearn for as we sometimes stumble through the mundane parts of a day.

The painting featured above entitled, “December’s Wintry Palette,” is just one of many that I’ve captured when my mind and heart were fascinated by a dramatic skyscape at our Double Heart Ranch. I hope it stirs your soul like it does mine. It is why I paint. A good friend once told me, “Gay, when you are solving business problems, it comes from your head. But when you paint, it comes from your soul.”
