I Have Joined The Rodeo!

Newsletter April Fools V3

After years of contemplating, I have finally decided to pursue my childhood quest to be a barrel racer and hit the rodeo circuit. It’s now or never. Or is it?… April Fools!

Yes, this is my attempt at an April Fool’s Day joke. Since my birthday is today — and, of course, April 1 always falls on April Fool’s Day — I’ve learned a thing or two about taking a joke. As a child on the elementary playground, I vividly remember being teased and called the April Fool.

As I’ve gained more powerful positions over the years, one thing has consistently helped me maintain strong relationships with friends, staff and teams: a little self-deprecating humor. When we can laugh at ourselves, others feel more comfortable around us. Knocking ourselves off the podium reminds everyone that we’re not so almighty — just part of the human race, foibles and flaws included.

Plus, I always enjoy getting a laugh, whether I’m addressing my team, giving a speech or making a point in a board meeting. Taking a moment to laugh infuses positive energy and provides profound psychological benefits.

April Fool’s Day has deep historical roots, explaining why we play practical jokes and pranks on this one day each year. And when your birthday falls on a day filled with trickery and tomfoolery, you learn to embrace the jokes and turn them into a fun, positive occasion. You can either laugh or cry. I choose to laugh.

Have some fun today, but don’t take yourself too seriously.

April Fools!
