Descending from generations of farmers and ranchers, our family has always taken our cues and lessons from the country. The land. The creatures that inhabit these spaces with us. Our values are based upon this. So much so that my company, T3, had a culture around ranch wisdom. My book, Cowgirl Power, draws on the knowledge learned over a lifetime of country life. My paintings are images of the grand skies I see at our Double Heart Ranch.
However, recently losing my husband and soulmate, Lee Gaddis, to a rare neurological disorder, I was once again reminded of how nature holds our hand through difficult and good times. We both suffered mightily to help him navigate an incurable and cruel disease that lasted over six years. When he passed away, I knew he had been released from pain and made whole again.
After a week in Austin, comforted by friends and family, I finally made it back to the ranch. My faithful dogs were first to console me. But then I walked over to our screened-in porch, where Lee and I had spent countless hours talking and entertaining friends, family and clients. I immediately noticed a beautiful butterfly struggling to escape the prison of the screens. I walked toward it and ever so carefully trapped it in my hands, then walked outside. When I opened my hands, the butterfly hesitated for a moment and stayed on top of my fingers. Then, with joy, it flew into the blue sky, out of my sight.
Many people and cultures believe that when someone passes, a butterfly symbolizes the soul’s transformation. Freedom, representing spiritual rebirth to the afterlife. I had a comforting feeling that all was well.
As we approach Christmas, whether you celebrate the holiday or not, I am reminded of the carol “Joy to the World.” Its origin in 1719 was not a Christmas song, but rather one of Christ’s return. His rebirth. Part of the lyrics include, “And heaven and nature sing.” Yes, heaven and nature are singing.
Joy to the world!
